The Norwegian Championship

I am currently sitting in the lobby at Jury’s Inn… I’ve just had breakfast and it is 4 o’clock. City is down by a goal to none and I am not feeling too well. I’ve got no ticket home, but it has been a great week anyhow!

My body tells me it’s been one of those poker trips with the boys; it’s the last day and I am tired as hell, but it is Saturday today so I won’t stay sober…

As I wrote in my last blog my main goal for the Norwegian Championship was the Heads up-event where 42 players were ready to fight it out. All the best players took part so this tournament had lots of money, a great title and not at least some honor and glory at stake.
20 Players had to play an extra match to start with so that the first round was down to 32 players. Unfortunately I was drawn and had to face a guy called William Hetle in the qualifying match, a heads up pro online and a nice guy. I know him best because he is the kid with 0 handicaps in golf. Strong!

We started off by testing each other out the first hands, before he found a tactic that won him pot after pot, as Hoyvold would have put it. I couldn’t pick up a better hand than 10 7 off suit for 15 rounds, so it was tough… We started with 20k chips and I was already down to 15k when the following hand occurred: He limps in on 100/200 as I look down on AsQc and raise it another 500. He calls and wants to see a flop which is AcKc7d. I bet 1k and he calls. Turn is 9c and I bet 2k and he raises another 5k. What the hell am I supposed to do now? I must honestly admit that I didn’t have a clue what he had at that point. I felt like I had three options:

a.   Call and hope to see a club on the river.
b.   Push all in and hoe he will fold, and if he doesn’t I probably have some outs anyhow.
c.   Call and see what happens

I chose options c.

The river was the king of hearts, a good card for me. I check and he bets 4800. I call and he shows his nice hand, Kd3s :(

The atmosphere was quite tensed after that and I had only 4500 chips left. Not many hands later, after I had been anted down to 3200 we got the money in the middle with my AK vs. K6. Unfortunately a 6 hit the board and I was the first to leave the tournament. I was very, very disappointed to leave the tournament even before it had started for real. William played very well and deserved to win, something that made me even more disappointed. And the end an to me unknown guy by the name of Oyvind something won the title.

In the Limit and Omaha event I had no big expectations. From the start of the limit tournament I hit almost every flop and you might say I had a good time when I was up to 20k when average was 6k. We started with 5k so I had a good run. But since the limit tourney was on my first day here, the beer and the drinks went down easily, and my chips disappeared quite quickly as well. After I busted me and Kenneth Strandli were playing heads up for 1k in different games. I wasn’t exactly sober, but I managed to break even. Probably my best performance during the championships :)

In the Omaha event I actually had Thomas Middelthon all in twice early in the competition, but he luckily won both times and actually went all the way to win the title. GG Middel-shit :)

In the Main event, which I love playing of course, I had some bigger ups and downs that I think I never had before in my career!!
I was quickly up from 10k to 15k so I could do some wandering around looking at others. I had a bit of a hangover so walking around getting some fresh air suited we well.

I switched table after a while and joined Kristian “Ulle” Ulriksen’s table. I think I’ve never seen a more serious table than this. 8 guys were dead quiet; 5 with hoods and IPods and the other 3 focused on the game so I just had to mess it up a bit. I started raising every hand and showing them and all of a sudden the hoods, the IPods and the sunglasses disappeared. Suddenly there were emo-chat and laughter as it is ment to be in such an event as the Norwegian Championship. It is okey that it is a serious tournament, but most people are here to have fun. !!

To make a long story short: On level 5 after being all in four times on the featured table, I tripled my stack before the table was broken. On level 6 I was up to 50k and on level 7 I had 95k on the highest peak when average was 25k. On level 8 I was back down to 50k again and on level 9 the adventure was over.

You might say I played some pots and then it tends to swing, but rarely as it did here!

My last chips went in the middle with set against a bigger set. But since this was the only pot with a cold deck I just have to deal with that. The rest went away on bluffing or calling too much….

I also have played some cash games here, but with little swings on my part. It is fun to play if you are semi-drunk, but last night I played a much emotional game at the Dusk Till Dawn.

It was me, Gunnar “Gunman” Osterbrod, Thomas Olavsrud and Kenneth Strandli who played a dead serious game of hearts! We all invested £200 and paid some rake in order to get our own dealer, so you might say a lot of honor and glory were at stake. The first game wasn’t finished until we had played for three hours. Luckily I beat Olavsrud who I had battled for the most of the game, but he got his revenge later when he crushed us all and took a superior victory! This was great fun, so I look forward to many hours playing hearts today as well :)

Now it is 16.50 and that sucker Adebayor has done it again. Another away game and another loss for City. And home in Stavanger is Viking able to just get a draw against a team that belongs in a lower league!! Tilt!! Now I am off to see Fulham vs. Liverpool together with Mykle and Olavsrud so GG from Nottingham!!
